Every registered domain has a minimum of 2 Name Server records which show where it's hosted i.e. by using these records you direct your domain name to the servers of a certain web hosting provider. In this way, you have both your site and your emails handled by the same service provider. On the lower level of the Domain Name System (DNS), nevertheless, there are a number of other records, like A and MX. The first one shows which server manages the website for a given domain address and is always an IP address (123.123.123.123), while the latter indicates which server deals with the emails and is always an alphanumeric string (mx1.domain.com). For instance, when you type a domain in your web browser, your request is directed through the global DNS system to the company whose NS records the domain name uses and from there you could be sent to the servers of a different service provider if you have set an IP address of the latter as an A record for your domain address. Having different records for the website and the emails suggests that you can have your website and your emails with 2 different companies if you'd like.

Custom MX and A Records in Hosting

If you have a hosting account from our company and you want to move either your site or your emails to a different provider, it'll take you literally just two clicks to do it. Our Hepsia Control Panel comes with an easy-to-use DNS Records tool, where all your domain names and subdomains are going to be listed alphabetically and you'll be able to see and modify the A and/or MX records for any of them. If you choose to use a different email provider and they ask you to set up more MX records than the default two, it won't take more than a couple of clicks either to add them. Also you can set different latency for these records and the lower the latency, the bigger the priority a given MX record is going to have. The propagation of every record that you modify or create will not take more than several hours and if needed, you will also be able to set the so-called Time-To-Live value, which indicates how long a record will stay active after it is changed or deleted.

Custom MX and A Records in Semi-dedicated Servers

The Hepsia hosting Control Panel, provided with our Linux semi-dedicated servers, will allow you to see the A and MX records for any of the domain names or subdomains in your account and if required, to edit any of them or set up new ones. Managing these records is very easy as all domains/subdomains are going to be listed alphabetically, so modifying a record is as simple as entering it in a box and saving the change. Creating a new one takes just a few more clicks and if you experience any troubles, you can check out our video tutorials on how to set up A and MX records. Our system is user-friendly enough to be used by individuals with no previous experience, yet advanced enough to give you complete control of all records and to enable you to have different A records even for domain.com and www.domain.com. If you're pointing your emails to a different company and they ask you to create more than two different MX records, you may choose the priority of each one.
